BIXBY -- Bixby Public Schools is set to unveil its newest addition to the district – Northeast Elementary and Intermediate School.
The new building, located south of Garnett and 131st Street, will be the new home for area students grades Pre-K through sixth.
“The opportunity to have a child start in Pre-K and watch them grow up through sixth grade and to know we had an impact in their lives is just wonderful,” said Jamie Milligan, principal at Northeast Elementary and Immediate. “This is the opportunity to build something from the ground up, to shape lives.”
Northeast is one of several new constructions in Bixby over the past two years. A new middle school was opened last year, while the former middle school building was converted and Brassfield Elementary and Intermediate was moved to that location.
A ninth grade center is currently under construction and set to be complete by the start of the 2014-15 school year.
About 500 students are set to begin school at Northeast, Aug. 20, while officials say the building can accommodate more than 900.
“(We have) lots of growth and that is exciting,” BPS Associate Superintendent Bryan Frazier said. “That’s a good problem to have. We are growing at a 3.5, 3.8 percent growth rate. Last year was about seven-plus. Don’t know if we want that to happen again, because that is difficult to keep up with, but it says good things about the people that we have in this district.”
Along with large spaces for learning and extracurricular activities, the building has several technology and safety features unique to the school.
Six of the classrooms can be converted into a safe room, with steel doors and protective window coverings that can be rolled down, in the event of an emergency. Also, every room in the building has also been equipped with SMART TVs.
“This is just an amazing building that Bixby has put together,” Milligan said.
This week, teachers are putting the finishing touches on their classrooms in preparation for the school’s ribbon cutting July 23, from 5 to 7 p.m.
“We are just beyond excited to have the children show up and see what an amazing building that Bixby all their patrons have built for the children here and their educational opportunities,” Milligan said.
