TULSA - The first phase of the new area code change goes into effect August 7th. It allows people to dial 918 to complete local calls.

The ten digit dialing is not mandatory until March 2011, but the Oklahoma Corporation Commission wants people to start changing their dialing habits now.

Back in January, the state approved a 539 area code overlay for the 918 calling area.

Local businesses, like 742-DINE, are already anticipating the change, especially since the number is a critical part of the company's marketing.

"I asked the question, what does that do graphically to our logo?" said co-owner Susan Scott. "Those questions I'm gonna have to start looking into."

The 918 area code is running out of numbers, so the state is adding the second area code. The dual area code is why callers will have to dial ten digits.

Existing phone numbers will not change. New numbers will be assigned the 539 area code.
