TULSA -
The story of the Admiral Twin drive-in was told before the big screen at Circle Cinema Wednesday.
"I've had people from the age of five to the age of 80 come and tell stories so that tells you a lot about what that place means to Tulsa," Blake Smith told reporters at a news conference. He's the owner of the Admiral Twin.
The drama of it's loss played out from the real-life characters who'd lived each moment.
"There was a part of me when it was going down, I was like gee what am I going to do now?" said Blake.
But he didn't wonder for long.
One restaurant owner held a fundraiser, someone else started selling T-shirts and then there was the Facebook page created to save the Admiral Twin. Today, it has more than 30,000 friends.
Smith plans to rebuild it and has already hired an architect. The idea is to build it so it looks similar to the original Admiral Twin.
"We're trying to get back to that form with maybe some upgrades here and there and just a little bit of maybe a twist on it, but it will be very respectful and very much like the old form," said Shelby Navarro with 1Architecture.
Efforts to pay for the $250,000 plus project continue this month with two concerts planned.
"Instead of just trying to ask people for donation, which out of emotion people have done, we're trying to give them an event that they can show up to, and we're trying to give something back to them," said Smith.
Meanwhile, the drama behind what started the fire is still unfolding.
"The fire may have been caused accidently by the possible theft of copper," said French.
Fire officials have no suspects so far and say they are looking at other possible leads.
So far, the owner has raised $24,400, but the owner is still hoping to reach their goal.
