AAA predicts increase in Oklahoma Labor Day travel

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- AAA Oklahoma predicts that 386,000 Oklahomans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day weekend.
That's a 4 percent increase from the 371,000 Oklahomans who traveled last year. A spokesman for AAA Oklahoma says consumer confidence appears to be driving the increase this year -- especially because gas prices have gone up lately.
Nationwide, 33 million people are expected to travel over Labor Day -- up 2.9 percent from 2011. The AAA says it's the third holiday this year in which more people are traveling: Memorial Day travel was up 1.2 percent and July 4 travel increased 4.9 percent.
The AAA says that nationally, 85 percent of travelers will travel by car over Labor Day.
