MUSKOGEE, Okla. - The parents of a 3-year-old child mauled by a family pit bull are in Muskogee police custody Friday.

The Muskogee 3-year old is in serious condition.

James Richardson, 33, and 22-year-old Chelsea Richardson were arrested on outstanding warrants not connected with the attack. An additional charge of child endangerment has been assigned to Chelsea Richardson.

Few details are known as to why the dog attacked, but police say it was chained up in the backyard of the family's home Thursday.

"Dogs are not babysitters," said Tulsa animal control officer Vikki Heuman. "They are animals, they have teeth and all dogs can bite."
