Little attention paid to Okla. property tax proposal

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A proposed state Constitutional amendment that would reduce the maximum increase in Oklahoma property taxes is drawing little attention -- even from those who say it would cost them money.

State Question 758 would reduce the annual increase from a current maximum of 5 percent to 3 percent.

Oklahoma State School Boards Association spokeswoman Emily Hutton says the proposal would mean an estimated drop of $5.6 million a year for common education and CareerTech. But Hutton says the association is taking no position on the measure -- instead informing school officials of the expected impact.

Dave Herbert with the County Government Legislative Council says counties would have to find ways to be more efficient -- but that the association isn't fighting the plan -- noting that "everybody hates property taxes."
