TULSA - Yogurt: for several years now the benefits of the calcium in diary has gotten a lot of attention because calcium has been linked to lower body weight. What people must remember though is that not all diary is healthy. Yogurt like this that's laced in sugar and comes with high fat granola to pour on it adds calories, and is just as sugar filled as a candy bar. Read the labels if your yogurt is loaded with sugar put it back.
Trail mix: this is a favorite for a lot of cyclists and runners but remember runners and cyclist are burning a lot of calories. Trail mix is loaded with calories. Yeah it might have some healthy fruit and nuts in it but unless you're actually on the trail moving, there are better snacks out there. A few handfuls of trail mix and you've eaten a meal, not a snack.
Granola/breakfast bars: there are several commercials that try to prove the health benefit of fruit bar or whole grain granola bars over other candy bars. The reality is that many of these whole grain bars are loaded with sugar and are just as high in calories as other candy. Ultimately whole grain and some fruit might make it a healthier choice but watch the calories. This little cereal granola bar is almost two hundred calories.
Sugar free: this used to be a big problem with my clients back in the days of the low carb craze. Now that it has passed it's not as bad but many still get fooled. These are a sugar free version of a popular cookie brand. Cookies like these often advertise sugar free or carb smart but unfortunately they're fat crazy. There was a five-calorie difference between these and the regular brand. Look, in this case just have the real thing.
