Fighting off drug addiction may be helped by a drug that is commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
In a study published in PNAS, researchers at Yale University discovered the active ingredient in Ritalin helped boost impulse control in cocaine addicts.
Addicts given the Ritalin compound were able to perform better on a computer test measuring impulse control, compared to addicts not given the compound.
MRI brain scans also showed activity in the part of the brain that is linked to inhibitory control.
However, the research is still preliminary and doctors are not suggesting that Ritalin can help treat drug addicts.
