Tired of paying $75 or more per month for your cell phone, on top of that $50 a month home phone?
If you don't want to cut the cord on your landline, you now have some new options, including some new home phones for as low as $10 - $15 a month.
Walmart is airing new commercials for Straight Talk home phone. The retailer's budget prepaid cell phone service now wants to be your home phone too.
"You'll be able to make unlimited calls from home with no contract or activation fee, using your existing corded or cordless handsets," the ad states.
Straight Talk is following the lead of Verizon Wireless in offering a home phone over cell phone lines.
Jim Alexander is one of many people now switching to the newest way to cut those bills: Verizon's home connect service.
"I think it's great because we are saving about $27 a month!"
Alexander and his wife Deb now use this little box for their home phones, and enjoy the savings.
As Low as $10 a Month
Ryan Potter of Verizon Wireless explained "it's $20 a month and it's a flat cost. Unlimited long distance, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding all included."
Verizon's Home Connect can be even cheaper, just $10 a month if you already have a Verizon Family Shared plan for cell phones.
AT&T has its own version in some markets, where it won't compete with AT&T local phone service, also at $10 or $20 a month.
Now, Walmart's Straight Talk is hoping to dominate the category, offering home phone service for just $15 a month.
Several consumer groups say its a great deal, with Caller ID, battery backup for power failures, and even a GPS for 911 emergency service, that will help rescuers find you.
Know the Downsides
There are some downsides with all of these, though.
-They may not work with your home alarm or medical alert systems.
-And you may experience garbled or dropped calls, as with all cell phones.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: If you rarely use your land line, all these options are worth exploring. A s the TV ad claims, it just may cut your phone bill in half.
Just remember they won't have the exact same reliability, and all come with some drawbacks, so research carefully so you don't waste your money.
