The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Committee on Gynecologic Practice recommend these guidelines be followed on routine assessments in primary and preventative care for women.
Teenie Boppers (Ages 13-18)
• Physical Exam
o Annually
• Pelvic Exam
o If recommended by your physician based on symptoms and history
• Chlamydia and gonorrhea testing
o Annually and as needed if sexually active
The Tweeners (Ages 19-39)
• Physical Exam including breast exam
o Annually
• Pelvic Exam
o For ages 19-20 if recommended by your physician based on symptoms and history
o Routinely done annually for age 21 or older
• Pap Smear
o Age 21 years: screen every 2 years
o Age 30 or older: screen every 3 years after three consecutive negative test results with negative history OR screen every 3 years after negative HPV DNA test and negative cervical cytology
• Chlamydia and gonorrhea testing
o Annually if aged 25 years or younger and sexually active
Prime Timers (Ages 40-64)
• Pap Smear
o May screen every 3 years after three consecutive normal test results
o Insurances will pay for yearly pap smears if desired
o If abnormal pap smear history, follow physician’s orders
• Colonoscopy
o Beginning at age 50 – colonoscopy every 10 years preferred
• Fasting glucose testing
o Every 5 years beginning at age 45 years
• Cholesterol assessment
o Every 5 years beginning at age 45 years
• Mammography
o E very 1-2 years beginning at age 40 years, yearly beginning at age 50 years
• Thyroid-stimulating hormone testing
o Every 5 years beginning at age 50 years
Golden Girls (Ages 65 and even more fabulous)
• Bone mineral density screening
o Screen no more frequently than every 2 years if no new risk factors
• Pap Smear
o Consider discontinuing at age 65 years or 70 years if patient has had three or more normal results in a row, no abnormal results in 10 years, no history of cervical cancer, no history of DES exposure in utero, is HIV negative, is not immunosuppressed
• Colorectal cancer screening
o Colonoscopy every 10 years preferred
• Fasting glucose testing
o Every 3 years
• Cholesterol assessment
o Every 5 years
• Mammogram
o Annually
• Thyroid –stimulating hormone testing
o Every 5 years
• Urinalysis
o Annually
