In 2003, eight year old Alexandra "Alex" Scott received a Volvo for Life Award, recognizing her extraordinary efforts within her community. Alex had raised $45,000 for pediatric cancer-related research and showed her determination to combat this life-threatening issue.
As part of her campaign, Alex wanted to raise $1 million for pediatric cancer studies by the end of the year. Sadly, on August 1, 2003, Alex passed away having raised more than $700,000 before she died.
Volvo kept Alex's campaign going after making an earlier promise to help her raise $1 million and mobilized thousands of dealerships nationwide to provide assistance. This automotive manufacturer founded Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, and over the past few years, has helped keep the inspiration and legacy of Alex alive by selling lemonade for pediatric cancer research.
The foundation launched its virtual lemonade stand to support Alex's cause in 2008, and visitors could purchase virtual lemonade at any time with 100 percent of the proceeds funding pediatric cancer research. In addition, Volvo created the Alexandra Scott Butterfly Award and hosts various foundation events throughout the year.
In the past, Volvo has supported numerous worthy causes. Volvo's involvement with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation displays the automotive manufacturer's goals and values, which are also reflected in the company's actions during critical situations around the globe.
Last November, Volvo offered immediate financial assistance to residents in New York and Allentown, Pennsylvania, after the devastation created by Hurricane Sandy. Volvo's disaster relief assistance helped those who were directly impacted by the storm get food, water and other essentials and provided support for several building restoration projects.
"With several major facilities and thousands of employees in regions affected by the storm, we're keenly aware of the lingering effects of this disaster," said Volvo spokesperson Dennis Slagle. "While the headlines are tapering off, the hard work of recovery is very much ongoing, and we want to do our part."
Volvo wants to be an automotive industry leader and is committed to offering support to communities nationwide to assist those in need. By donating funds to worthy causes and providing assistance in crises, Volvo continues to build its reputation as a conscientious automotive supplier.
Through its vehicles, Volvo also supports drivers every day. The automotive manufacturer frequently evaluates methods to become more efficient and productive, which is reflected in its top-notch models.
