The highly-anticipated second installment of the “Twilight” series hits theaters Friday.
Perhaps never before has a movie gripped pop culture, specifically with the Tween age group, than author Stephanie Meyer’s saga about a teenage vampire falling in love with a northwest Washington girl.
So as “New Moon” takes over the entertainment industry, we thought it’d be appropriate to take a look at the author, the actors and most importantly, the story leading up to the 2nd movie in the series.
Here's our First Question: Author Stephanie Meyer began writing Twilight, the first book of the now-famous series, following what?
A. A vivid dream
B. Hearing a story from her daughter
C. Recalling a childhood nightmare
D. Reading poetry
Answer: A. A vivid dream - "I stayed in bed, thinking about the dream," Meyer writes on
her Web site. "Unwillingly, I eventually got up and did the immediate necessities, and then put everything that I possibly could on the back burner and sat down at the computer to write—something I hadn't done in so long that I wondered why I was bothering."
Good call Stephanie. That was in 2002, when Edward Cullen and Bella Swan were first born. It wasn't until the 2008 release of the movie version of "Twilight" that they were given permanent faces.
Robert Pattinson, the latest version of the teenage heart-throb, plays the vampire protaganist Edward Cullen. That brings us to our
Next Question: What major motion picture did Pattinson make his first appearance in?
A. Eragon
B. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
C. Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith
D. Superbad
Answer: B. 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' - What a difference a couple of years make. A much younger looking Pattinson appears in this 2005 cast photo with fellow stars (clockwise from Pattinson) Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Katie Leung, Stanislav Ianevski and Clemence Poesy.
Pattinson played Triwizard Tournament Hogwarts Champion Cedric Diggory.
So now we know where 'Edward' got his start, but what about his love interest in the movie, Bella. Our Next Question is: What 2002 movie did actress Kristen Stewart make her first major appearance in?
A. Panic Room
B. Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone
C. Die Another Day
D. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Answer: A. Panic Room - Yes, that's really her! It's been seven years since Stewart played Sarah Altman alongside Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker and Jared Leto.
While the ongoing love story between Stewart's character and her vampire boyfriend may not always be romantic dinners and play-dates, the "Twilight" saga certainly does not fall with most vampire movies into the Horror category. That brings us to our Next Question: Which of the following vampire movies is NOT on Hollywood.com's list of Top 25 Highest Grossing Domestic Horror Films of All Time?
A. Van Helsing (2005)
B. Bram Stroker's Dracula (1992)
C. Interview with the Vampire (1994)
D. From Dusk Til Dawn (1996)
Answer: D. From Dusk Til Dawn - Van Helsing is actually the only vampire movie from the last 15 years to crack the
Hollywood.com list, which is adjusted to reflect the change in ticket prices over the years.
All right, let's move back to the 'Twilight' series and dive a little deeper into the story. Here's a tough one for those of you that have read the book AND seen the movie (Yes, there are some who haven't!). Our
Next Question is: What school-related activity happens in the movie but not the book?
A. Bella and Edward attend prom together
B. Bella and Edward team up for a biology lab partner project
C. Bella, Edward and the rest of their class take a field trip to a greenhouse
D. Bella and Edward go to a science fair
Answer: C. The greenhouse field trip - An important factor in the plot of the movie, it was not a part of the book. Bella and Edward teamed up for the prom and the biology lab project in both the book and the movie, while they didn't attend a science fair together in either.
One of the major players in any book or movie is the setting, the focus of our Next Question: In what real-life Washington town is the series set in?
A. Olympia
B. Forks
C. Neah Bay
D. Taholah
Answer: B. Forks - That was pretty easy right? Any self-proclaimed Twilight fan shouldn't have been too fooled by that one!
So Bella and Edward live in Forks, but the lovebirds are obviously not the only characters in the movie. Jacob Black, played by actor Taylor Lautner, is a family friend of Bella's, and has a key role in the story. So for our Next Question, we want to know: Where does Jacob live?
A. La Push Reservation
B. Olympia
C. Port Angeles
D. Forks
Answer: A. La Push Reservation - Jacob, a member of the Quileutes Indian tribe, lives on a nearby reservation.
Edward isn't the only vampire in town. In fact, his entire "family" loves the taste of blood. Just how many sets of fangs are in the Cullen coven?
A. 7
B. 9
C. 10
D. 11
Answer: A. 7 - 10 was out of the question right away, because if you'll remember, Edward is the only 'family' member to not have a 'soul-mate.'
Edward and his crew aren't your typical vampires, or at least the vampires you see in most horror flicks. So, here's our Next Question: What commonly-rumored vampire weakness is de-bunked by the Cullen clan?
A. Daylight
B. Garlic
C. Holy Water
D. All of the Above
Answer: D. All of the Above - Much of "Twilight" happens during the day, so that's out. And Edward tells Bella pretty early on that the ONLY thing that can hurt him is other vampires.
Ready to wrap up? So are we! In the last scene of "Twilight," Bella and Edward share a dance at the prom. It's the discussion they have that takes us to our Last Question: What does Bella tell Edward her biggest fear is during that dance?
A. Victoria finding her and killing her
B. Edward accidentally killing her
C. Growing old while Edward does not age
D. Having to move away from Forks
Answer: C. Growing old while Edward does not age - While all the options are real dangers, it's with this fear in mind that she begs Edward to make her a vampire as the movie ends.
So there it is! How did you do? Are you properly prepped now to sink your teeth into "New Moon," the second installment of the "Twilight" saga, now hitting theaters?
We know, we know. We haven't even begun to cover the depth of the characters, story and themes of the saga, but we hope this touches you up on your basic knowledge of Bella, Edward and the rest of the "New Moon" characters.
