Country singer Randy Travis arrested on suspicion of public intoxication

DENTON COUNTY, Texas - Country singer Randy Travis was arrested Monday morning in Sanger, Texas on a charge of suspicion of public intoxication.

Travis, who has a ranch in nearby Tioga, was spotted in front of the Sanger First Baptist Church with an open bottle of wine, police said.

"A report of a suspicious vehicle was called in to Sanger police," said Tom Reedy, with the Denton County Sheriff's Department.  "Police go to investigate and find him smelling like alcohol and (he) had an open bottle of wine."

Reedy said Sanger officers took Travis to Denton where he was booked into the county jail at 1:30 a.m. Monday.  He was released a few hours later.

"They take you to jail for at least four hours, time to sober up," said Reedy about the Class C misdemeanor for which Travis was cited.
