"3...2...1...Lego!"
Over 200 students from across Oklahoma came together Saturday to compete in a robotics tournament at the Owasso 7th Grade Center.
Students ranging from nine to 14 years old created robots using the Lego Mindstorm building kit. The robots competed on a 4 feet by 8 feet field consisting of Lego components and had two and a half minutes to complete as many tasks as possible. Organizers are seeing more kids become involved in the exciting learning process.
"Last year there were 16 teams in the entire state. In this scrimmage tournament we have 21 teams and there are 63 total teams registered in the state," said Jack Lyons, Chairman of the Oklahoma Science and Engineering Foundation.
While all the students involved were enjoying the friendly competition, they were also learning on a Saturday afternoon.
"We are teaching them engineering principles. They are learning about protyping and building and catastrophic failure and all that good stuff and they don't even realize it," said Lyons.
The championship will take place on December 12 in Stillwater.
