Stories of the Heart

Go Red for WomenThe statistics regarding heart disease often shock people when they first hear them.

According to the American Heart Association, about one in three adults in the United States has some form of cardiovascular disease (including hypertension, coronary heart disease, and other heart-related conditions).

Heart disease remains the number one cause of death for both men and women; in fact, cancer comes in a distant second.

In 2004, the last year for which comprehensive figures are available, 410,628 men and 459,096 women died due to cardiovascular disease.

The numbers for cancer in that same year are dramatically lower: 286,830 men and 267,058 women died of any of the various forms of cancer.

Another surprising note... the incidence of heart disease rises faster for women than men as they age.

To help get the message out about women and heart health, 2NEWS HD has teamed with the Tulsa chapter of "Go Red For Women," a national organization dedicated to raising awareness about this literally vital topic.

Thursday, February 5, Go Red held a casting call during the Wear Red Day Kickoff event at Jackie Cooper Imports, 93rd and Memorial, Tulsa.

Women shared their stories of dealing with or preventing heart disease. Then, the kjrh.com community cast their votes to choose their favorite "Story of the Heart." You can watch the five finalists in the video player below.

Here are the results of the voting:
Jane Tobben 7,178     Linda Sellers 1,364     Barbara Bird 5,646     Davidson 567     Tonya Holstead 2,679     Total: 17,434
