A viewer brought the concern from her neighborhood gasoline pump. Emma thinks gas stations should install better nozzles to prevent fumes from getting into the air.
She writes "Tulsa isn't on the dirty air list but it could happen soon if businesses don't help with ozone levels. Many stations don't have proper baffles on the filler nozzles."
What Emma calls baffles are those rubber collars attached to nozzles to help keep fumes from escaping while fueling.
Dirty air cities have to have vapor recovery nozzles.
Our friend Recycle Michael at the Metropolitan Environmental Trust explains because Tulsa is in compliance those are not required here.
Cities on the dirty air list like Dallas and Kansas City do require the special hoses and pumps to capture the gasoline vapors.
Here's the good news. There's a simple way we can all do our part to cut down on the excess fumes that can harm the ozone. Don't top off your tank when fueling. It is that simple. And definitely don't try to add more fuel after the click indicating the tank is full.
