Heart attack victim searches for help for wheelchair bound son

Last Update: 7/02 2:19 pm
In the days before Independence Day, Marty and Sammy Berryhill feel more independent leaving their home in Wagoner.

"We've got a life now again, you might as well say."

But back on Easter Sunday in church, they ran into a huge roadblock on their road to independence.
Marty was greeting visitors.

"I don't remember anything else, I dropped dead, I just dropped dead."

Marty says she suffered a heart attack and stopped breathing.

She didn't have a pulse for ten minutes.

But Marty says as an Easter miracle would have it, a lady visiting the church, the one Marty was welcoming, was a doctor, who performed CPR until paradmedics arrived.

"They sent me to St. Francis Hospital, they said I had a 100% blockage, and they fixed that, they put a stint in and he said you're fine now."

Except that she had to take it easy for several weeks, no heavy lifting, and no driving.

Which led to Marty's next problem.

Her son, Sammy, depends on her to get him to the local hospital three days a week, where he volunteers.

"I just think it's a blessing for me to do that," Sammy says.

Marty told us, "He loves it, that's his highlight of the week, is his volunteering."

But it would be a long time until Marty could lift Sammy's chair into the car, and drive him to the hospital.

"I didn't know what to do."

So Marty called Channel 2 and got a hold of one of our Call 4 Action volunteers, who did some reseach. It wasn't long until Marty's problem was solved.

"That was wonderful."

Our volunteer found someone at Wagoner City Hall who provided transportation for Sammy.

Then, a few weeks later, Marty found a van, one equipped so Sammy can do everything he needs to do, except the driving, which his mom was now cleared to do.

With a switch, Sammy can load himself up into the van.

"We're just very independent again."

And that's something to celebrate.
