Delay in veteran's educational benefits

Last Update: 11/06 2:25 pm
As you'd expect from a two year old, C.J. cries every once and a while.

But even his mom, a Navy veteran, has shed a few tears the last three months.

A delay in new Veteran's Administration benefits caused some financial stress for Corinne's family.

"There was a lot of money going out and wasn't a whole lot coming in."

Corinne was expecting the new V-A educational benefit to start on August 1st.

It's designed to pay tuition and a monthly housing and living allowance, while she's going to college.

The living allowance is supposed to amount to about $950 a month for Corrine's family.

But that check never arrived, not in August, not in September, and not in October.

"It put us behind in bills."

Especially in her mortgage.

Yet Corrine says she feels torn.

She really needs that new V-A benefit, but she appreciates the V-A too.

"The VA does everything they can, they are very supportful to veterans, they do everything they can to help us out."

After one of Corrine's friends told us about her family's situation, we called V-A headquarters.

A spokesperson promised to look into her delay in benefits.

A few days later, Corrine received a $3,000 check for the last three month's worth of benefits.

As it turns out, the V-A started receiving so many complaints from across the country, that they recently had to release emergency funds to help pay those new educational benefits.

"It was just a weight lifted off my shoulders."
