The e-mail in question has been circulating for about four years but many people are asking us about it right now.
It's the one claiming if you don't register your cell phone on the Do Not Call list this month your number will be released to telemarketers and you'll be charged for each call. Trena forwarded it to me saying "This is going around our office. Is it legit?"
It's making it all around our area and it is not legit.
You can register your cell phone as well as your home phone on
https://www.donotcall.gov/ and it's true it's a very good idea to do that. It's also true there is a database of cell numbers but you have to opt in to be on it.
It's a myth your number has been widely released to telemarketers and you have to pay for all incoming calls from them.
DoNotCall.gov is also where you can make complaints about calls that violate the list. You have to be registered there for 30 days before you can make a complaint.
The next time you get one of those "Send this to everyone!" e-mails go to
Snopes.com and do a simple search before you hit your friends and co-workers with it. You may learn something interesting and you won't clog up other's inboxes.
