A new e-mail is circulating with a supposed warning at the gas pump

Last Update: 7/28/2008 1:16 pm
Rich brought us an e-mail that sounds like a simple solution to a big problem. He says "The e-mail says you have to press the 'clear' button when you finish pumping your gas or other charges can be added after you leave. People need to know!"

People need to know it is not true. Experts say when you pay at the pump and fill-up the transaction is complete as soon as you hang up the nozzle.

While the e-mail brings up some unfounded concerns it leaves off an important warning that could cost you big bucks.

What can happen is a criminal can install a device called a skimmer to card-reading machines at the gas pump. It records credit card information and can later be used to empty bank accounts.

You won't be able to spot it at the pump so the best defense is keeping a close eye on your bank account activity and credit card billing.

The sooner you report fraudulent activity the easier it is to dispute unauthorized charges and shut out those criminals.
