It appears a multi million dollar settlement involving Dell computerin Massachusetts could be extended to  other states.

If so, that could mean some money back for people who thought they were buying peace of mind ...but ended up with something else.

Fix Your Own Laptop!

When Tony Ivey purchased this dell laptop back in 2005.... he also bought an Dell extended warranty or service plan, for another 400 dollars.

But he says when the hard drive crashed, Dell refused to send a technician.... instead making him fix it himself! He says Dell shipped him a new hard drive...then instructed him to open up his computer and replace the bad unit, while talking with a phone rep thousands of miles away.

Tony says" my issue wasn't with the computer itself. Any hard drive can crash or whatever. My worry and concern was I bought a warranty that they presented as one thing when in actuality it turned out to be something else."

Dell Agrees to Change Policies, Refund Money

After hundreds of similar complaints, New York Attorney General Cuomo sued Dell. Dell has now agreed to pay a $4 million dollar penalty. At this point, only New York residents will benefit...But the ag says it may be extended to other states.

If that happens, people like Tony may get a refund for the do-it-yourself warranty they paid hundreds of dollars for.

Under the settlement, Dell also agreed not to promote zero percent interest on computer purchases if most people dont qualify, as the AD alleged Dell was doing.

I'll let you know in an update if Dell customers in other states can take part in this settlement, so you don't waste your money.  I'm John Matarese.
