John MatareseWith many of us strapped for cash right now, how would you like to buy an iPod for $25? A laptop computer for $200? Or a working car for just 800 bucks?
You may be able to.....through the property room at your local police department. And here's the best part: now you can shop from home!
Tons of Unclaimed ItemsPolice Officer Rob Payne showed me racks and racks of bicycles...some nearly new.
"Right here is load of bicycles...We probably get 200, 300 a year," he says.
Officer Payne has hundreds of seized and abandoned items clogging his Police Department's property room.
He has everything from car stereos...to chain saws... to jewelry...to expensive mountain bikes that any teenager would love to own.
You'll find lots of lawn care equipment and power tools, all working perfectly. Most of it was simply stolen out of someone's open garage, then abandoned or recovered by police.
You Can Buy it...CheapSo what happens to all this unclaimed treasure? In the past, Police and Sheriff's departments sold it all for pennies on the dollar at courthouse auctions. But for most of us, auctions are complicated and outside our comfort level.
Greg Slade says "if you've every participated in a sheriff's auction, they can be very intimidating."
