New pros and cons are being reported on statins, popular cholesterol-lowering drugs.
One new study led by researchers at Albert Einstein Medical College finds taking statins significantly lowers the risk for blood clots among patients with atherosclerosis, or hardened arteries. 593 patients heart attack or stroke patients were enrolled in the blood clot study. The authors found those taking the highest doses of statins saw the biggest benefit.
However, a second study finds statins may have a negative effect on patients with diastolic heart failure, a condition where the chambers of the heart are too stiff to properly fill with blood. Patients with diastolic heart failure who were taking statins reported more dyspnea, fatigue and decreased exercise tolerance. 136 people participated in this study.
Both study authors suggest patients talk to their doctors about the risks and benefits of the statin drugs.
The findings were presented at the American College of Chest Physicians annual meeting.
