Modernizing the nation's food safety programs is the focus of U.S. Senate committee meetings in Washington, D.C.
Thursday's hearing comes in the wake of last year's salmonella outbreak that sickened over 600 people and killed nine.
The head of the Food and Drug Administration and a number of food supply organizations, including the Fresh Produce Association and some state departments of Agriculture and Consumer services, are speaking to the Senate panel.
Senators are looking at the effects new rules might have on small farmers and other food producers.
There are new food safety bills now making their way through both the House and the Senate.
