A good night's sleep may be the pleasant, yet unexpected, benefit of retirement.
Researchers at the University of Turku in Finland looked at data on 14,000 older adults and found they were much less likely to have sleep disturbances in the seven years after retirement, than they were in the seven years before retiring.
Researchers say the participants in this study had good job security while they worked, and received pensions that were at least 80-percent of their salary.
The sleep benefits might not be the same for people who are forced to retire, or who don't have such high pension plans.
The study was published in the journal Sleep, November 1, 2009.
