Responding to swine flu: gender matters

Last Update: 10/22 8:33 pm
Women may be doing a better job than men in preventing the spread of the H1N1 flu virus.

The American Red Cross surveyed nearly 1,000 Americans about the impact the swine flu virus is having on their lives.

Nearly half admitted being worried about H1N1, mostly women. In addition, more women say they are interested in flu information than men.

A greater percentage of women than men are using hand sanitizer, covering their coughs and avoiding touching their eyes. 84-percent of women say they are washing their hands more carefully and more often, compared to 71-percent of men.

Only 20-percent of those surveyed said they have talked with their employers about what would happen if they had to take time off to care for someone with the flu.
