Genetic studies providing insights into schizophrenia

Three large studies of genes linked to schizophrenia are providing researchers with a better understanding of the disease.

Experts across the globe studied the genes of more than 50,000 people. Some had schizophrenia, others did not have the disease. They were able to identify thousands of gene malfunctions, which researchers believe account for one-third of cases.

However, the study, published in the journal Nature, found schizophrenia does not have just one genetic cause. It is actually a mixture of several genetic factors. The study also found the disease is genetically similar to bipolar disorder, which is also known as manic depression.

The increased risk among gene carriers was small, about 15 to 25-percent higher than the general population.

Experts say more research is needed, but this study gives them a better idea of how schizophrenia works.
