Taking acetaminophen, a common pain reliever, may raise the risk of asthma in children and adults, according to a review of research.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia (Canada) looked at 19 clinical studies, which include data on nearly a half million people. Those who had used acetaminophen had a slightly increased risk for developing asthma within a year. .

It is unclear why this might be the case, so researchers suggest more studies to confirm their conclusion. Their review included a meta-analysis of 19 clinical studies

Study led by researchers and published in the November, 2009 issue of CHEST.
