The Feds are trying to shut down scammers using the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's (FDIC) name. If you get an
e-mail claiming to be from the FDIC do not open and definitely do not click on the link.
In a memo from Commissioner Mick Thompson of the Oklahoma State Banking Department he warns "The e-mail asks recipients to visit the official FDIC website by clicking on a hyperlink provided which appears to be related to the FDIC and directs recipients to a fraudulent Web site. Recipients should consider the intent of the software as a malicious attempt to collect personal or confidential information."
If you receive the e-mail you're asked to forward it to: Alert@FDIC.gov
The FDIC is trying to identify the source of the e-mails and stop them. The subject line of the fraudulent e-mails generally include the wording "check your bank deposit insurance coverage". Inside the e-mail states your bank has been named as a failed bank so you need to open a personal FDIC insurance file.
If you receive it... Forward the e-mail to Alert@FDIC.gov and then delete it.
