Scammers troll the internet looking for victims

Last Update: 6/03 12:16 pm
Tracey is selling a high dollar guitar for nearly $2,000 on Craigslist and became the target of a scam artist. She writes "The would-be buyer e-mailed me saying he'd send a check for $3,800. He said to cash it and wire back the $1,800 difference."

Tracey caught on in time. Trying to quickly sell the guitar could have cost her, big.

If you cash a check that later turns out to be bogus the bank can and will come back on you.
Asking to send a check for more than the price of the guitar screams scam. Never do business this way.

And avoid wiring money unless you absolutely know who you're wiring it to because once you send it off there's no way to track where it actually went or get the money back.

Craigslist offers tips on spotting and avoiding scams when selling or buying items online.
