A new vehicle purchase was exciting for John until he got to the tag office.
John was excited to get his new motorcycle street legal but wasn't too happy with what happened at the tag office. He says "I was shocked to find the state is going to tax me on a higher amount than I actually paid for the vehicle. Something about a law passed in 2000."
It's true voters passed a law in 2000 that added excise tax for used, in addition to new, vehicles. It was touted as a way to lower tag costs for everyone.
The law also approved the Oklahoma Tax Commission subscribe to a service called R.L. Polk. When you go to tag your vehicle the agent enters your VIN number and the system spits out an average retail price for our region. If that price is more than 20% higher than what you paid you are charged at that higher rate.
This is something that could impact quite a few folks who took advantage of the Cash for Clunkers program as well so it's best for anyone to know before you go to the tag agency.
