If you've ever gotten behind on your taxes beware of companies that claim to have the answer to your problem.

Jackie owes the IRS and was tempted by a company's offer to take over her dealings with the agency and get her out of debt. She says  "The company advertises tax relief, abatement of interest and stopping liens. The representative said he'd stop all collections with the IRS and deal with the agency for me. Then he said he needed a $5,500 check and my bank account information."

Jackie wisely decided to first check with the Better Business Bureau where she found a ton of complaints about the company taking people's money and doing nothing for them.

People are allowed to hire representatives if they want but anyone claiming they can stop the IRS from collection efforts is not being truthful.

It's a good reminder to always check out any company on www.BBB.org

Also, treat IRS debt as you would any other. If you're having trouble paying contact the agency directly and work with them to get things cleared up.

Paying a company a bunch of money to clear up your finances is almost always going to result in digging you deeper into debt.

There is help available for low income people who need help dealing with the IRS.

You can contact the IRS, directly, with any questions or issues by calling (800) 829-1040
