A tax preparer brought us a worrisome scam some of his clients are falling for

Albert prepares people's taxes each year and is concerned for his clients, and others, being approached about getting a bigger refund from the IRS. He explains "I've been approached by four of my clients asking for copies of their 2006 and 07 tax returns. They plan to send them to a company, along with $400, with the promise of refunds of up to $3,000 because of a little known IRS law. They're being scammed."

Albert is an enrolled agent working for a tax attorney and they'd know if there was an easy way to get $3,000 from the IRS.

We checked further by going directly to the IRS and the spokesman confirms this is not legit. It's true federal income tax returns can be amended based on tax law changes but there's not a little known law resulting in some sort of automatic refund.

If you get this approach have the person give you the exact law that provides this promised refund then check it out directly with the IRS by calling (800) 829 1040

As a result of us giving the IRS a heads-up about this problem a treasury inspector will now be looking into the issue.
