Wind - Nov. 28, 2008

     In meteorology, a north wind means the winds are coming from the north and
blowing to the south.  The direction of the wind is very important in forecasting.
North winds can transport in cooler weather from northern latitudes and a south
winds will often mean warmer weather.

     In forecasting here, a southwest wind will often bring us drier air which allows
for much warmer weather, while a southeast wind will advect more gulf moisture
into the region, making it more humid.

     In the data forecasters use, the wind direction is expressed in azimuth degrees. 
A north wind is 0 degrees, an east wind is 90 degrees, a south wind is 180 degrees, and
a west wind is 270 degrees.

     I do get asked this question a few times a year, once from a deer hunter who wanted
some clarification before he set up his hunting spot.  Animals have a keen sense of
smell, and he wanted to position himself in the right tree to wait out his prey.

      Years ago my daughter amazed me one day when she came home from school and told
me she knew how to read a map and knew North, East, South, and
West.  Beaming with pride she demonstrated how she kept it straight.  Her teacher
taught her, to remember Never Eat Sour Weenies.  We still laugh about that.
