Weather Gifts - Nov 9, 2007

Thank you for encouraging your grandson. There are many books, DVDs, and weather gadgets to spark a kids imagination. Check with your local librarian on science and weather books that are popular with children your grandson’s age.

Here are a couple I would recommend; “Weather Myths”, by Mike Artell, is written for children ages 5 and up. It has weather facts, riddles, and answers science questions in a way children can understand. “Weather Forecasting” by Michael Kline, has more information about how we predict the weather. It’s written for grade levels 4th to 6th.

On the Internet at: www.windandweather.com you will find all kinds of weather gear for young people and us not so young folks. An indoor/outdoor thermometer, a Galileo thermometer, or a weather radio would all make a great gift for any young weather enthusiast. While you are online, look at www.wxdude.com this site has a lot of unique features about the weather written for children. Most kids will enjoy the fun little weather songs that are recorded and you can listen to.

The best gift my be your encouragement and interest. Consider a gift of two rain gauges. Tell your grandson that one is for your house and the other is for his house. Make a plan that every time it rains, at either location, you will call the other, and compare notes. You could keep a “special” rain log listing the dates and amounts it rained or snowed. I think the idea of you being involved in his interest and that he will hear from you every time there is rain, would make a great gift. Great for both of you. If you have a weather question, send it to: askdan@kjrh.com
