Jan. 23, 2009 - Snow Ice Cream

Last Update: 1/23 10:44 pm
From L.T.: Growing up, my mother would make ice cream out of snow. I remember
my brothers and me eating it after long days of playing out in the cold. Do you
know the recipe?

I too have fond memories of eating snow ice cream. My mom would gather up
snow in a large bowl and return to the kitchen while we continued working on our snow man. A few minutes later she would call us and meet us at the back door with a broom to clean the snow off our shoes before we could come into the house. We would leave a pile of wet clothes on the back porch and sit in the warm kitchen and devour the frozen treat.

Nearly every recipe I found came with a warning, that snow ice cream may not be healthy. The articles explained that today’s pollution and chemicals in the air might contaminate the snow, and this old practice wasn’t recommended. So do this at your own risk.

Here is the recipe I found: Mix one gallon of freshly fallen snow with 1 cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, and 2 cups of milk. Some of the older
recipes include adding a raw egg. I would not recommend this because of the
risk of Salmonella.

Along with the numb fingers, the snowball fights with my sisters and brother,
and long days of making a snow fort in the front yard, eating mom’s snow ice cream was a memory that has yet to melt away.
