Bartlesville's Frontier Pool, Sooner Splash Pad busy in summer heat

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - It may come as no surprise that Bartlesville's city pools have been popular this summer, but considering the daily triple-digit temperatures over the last few weeks, the pools have not been as busy as expected.

"It is just too hot," City of Bartlesville Pool Manager Michelle Brown told 2NEWS, saying that for Sooner Pool, an Olympic-sized pool on Bartlesville's east side, the number of patrons has dropped slightly to 100 to 150 daily due to the simmering heat.

"It is so hot I don't think anybody wants to get out and do anything."

Popularity of the Sooner Splash Pad, a water play area featuring water cannons, fountains and other features, has remained constant however, likely because the water is fresher and cooler and the area offers shade.

The neighboring Sooner Pool has no shade and it's water temperature remains around 88 to 89 degrees, she said.

As the splash pad is popular, so is the Frontier Pool, a miniature water park featuring water slides, current pools and a shallow water play area for younger children, which daily sees 225 to 250 patrons.

Shortly after its regular noon hour opening on Thursday, the pool was teeming with activity, children riding the water slides, fountains showering them in cool wetness, other children being swept through a circular current pool and others with their parents playing water basketball.

Bartlesville resident Darren Holden, 32, in pool with his kids told 2NEWS he took the day off work to take his four children, ages ranging from 10 to 5, to enjoy Frontier Pool.

"I'm having fun with the kids before we have to go back to the hectic lifestyle of kids at school and working."

For him, the pool was just the place to during the day's triple-digit temperatures.

"It's very nice on these hot days."

On other days he takes the family to Copan Point at Copan Lake, because its cheaper, but Frontier Pool he said is great because of all the different activities and the extra eyes of the lifeguards always on watch.

"We like to come here because of the slides and they can go everywhere here and you don't have anything to worry about."

For those interested in taking advantage Bartlesville's public pool facilities, the Sooner Splash Pad is open 9 a.m to 9 p.m. daily and is free to the public. The Sooner and Frontier swimming pools open on at noon and close at 6 p.m daily.
