2-car accident near Copan hospitalizes 4 Kansas residents

COPAN, Okla. - A two-car collision Tuesday just north of Copan sent to Jane Phillips Medical Center four Kansas residents — one in serious condition.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. just north of Copan on U.S. Highway 75 near County Road 700.

It happened when 77-year-old Copan resident Frank Eugene Hester, driving a 2000 Chevy pickup, was eastbound on a turnaround between the northbound and southbound traffic on U.S. 75 and pulled out in front of a northbound 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Donald Eugene Fuqua, 86, of Caney, Kan.

Transported to Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Fuqua was then transferred to St. Johns in Tulsa where he was admitted in serious condition with head, trunk internal, trunk external, arm and leg injuries.

His passenger and wife Joella Dee Fuqua, 83, transported to Jane Phillips with leg and internal trunk injuries, was admitted in good condition. Two other passengers — Mary Ann Codding, 79, and Mitchell Lee Horst, 57 — both of Caney, Kan., were treated at the hospital and released.

Hester refused treatment at the scene.
